There is something about the morning that lends itself to worship. The stillness, the quiet. The newness of the day.
The beauty of the morning had been completely lost on me until three years ago. Up to that point, I had been a lover of sleep, craving ten or more hours of sleep a night. I am just naturally a person who needs more sleep to function at full capacity- and I never denied myself those hours. As a child at sleepovers, I was always the first kid asleep and the last kid awake. I never pulled an all-nighter in college, preferring to fail the test than sacrifice sleep (preferably neither…).
My love-affair with sleep ended abruptly with the birth of my daughter. Kids have a way of doing that to you. Suddenly, my sleep schedule was shattered into tiny shards of three or four-hour naps. That whole first year I struggled to adjust to my lack of sleep, and as a nasty side effect, I became a very cranky, very angry person.
Seven months into motherhood, broken and exhausted, I asked the Lord to please show me how to find rest in my new sleepless reality. What He said shocked me.
“Wake up an hour earlier than J and sit with me.”
“No, Lord, I said I’M NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP. Losing another hour isn’t going to help.”
But again I heard, “Wake up and sit with me”.
So, I trusted Him. It happened to be the beginning of February, so I dedicated the next 28 days to trying it God’s way. I planned to wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning and spend time with God. Most days I did it. A few days I did not. Three years later, and for the first time in my life, I am still enjoying the abundant benefits of waking up early and sitting with God.
