It was such an honor to be invited back onto Sandy Cooper’s podcast, The Balanced MomCast!

What was one of the most powerful practices I pick

What was one of the most powerful practices I picked up in 2021?? Uninstalling Instagram every single weekend.

As I began to flesh it out what a Sabbath day off might look like for me, I realized uninstalling Instagram would need to be a part of my practice.

For one thing, Instagram is part of my work and because I was setting aside all things work-related, Instagram had to go. For another, I didn't like how attached I was to the app during the week and I wanted to "cut ties" each weekend to fight back against addiction.

So, I committed to uninstalling my app every Friday afternoon and leaving it off of my phone until Monday morning. It's proven to be a powerful step that allows me to enjoy this space and show up authentically, week after week.

Maybe this is a practice you'd like to try in 2022? If so, today is a great day to start!

We are six days into 2022... anyone else feeling behind?? 🙋

If so, take a deep breath and take in Alastair Sterne's words. No one (and no thing) needs to set your pace except Christ.

Do you know the beautiful thing about Jesus? He really loved to walk. We never see Him running from one town to another, or rushing past a crowd to get to the next hill. His pace was slow. His gait was easy. And He's inviting you to walk alongside Him this year.

So ease up on those timelines and lay down those self-doubts! Let Christ be at the center of all you do and not a moment will be wasted.

Do you have a work routine or ritual? A handful of steps that help you transition from personal time to work time?

When I worked in an office, having a ritual didn’t feel all that important...I mean, I had my commute- that was transition enough! But now that I work from home, I've found I really struggled to put down personal tasks and pick up work. I struggled, that is, until I had a one-hour coaching call with the amazing @mikaeladmathews.

Mikaela helped me identify a handful of things that motivate me and help me feel ready to work. After our call, I wrote those things on a notecard and set it on my desk. Now, every day at 9 am, I sit at my desk and run through my list:

➡ Cleaning my desk helps me clear my mind.

➡ A hot coffee settles me in and gives me something to do with my hands while I'm thinking...otherwise I'd reach for my phone...

➡ Lighting a candle reminds me that God is present and at work in my work. Seeing its flame helps me refocus when I get off task.

➡ Removing my phone...because I have no self-control and it literally has to be in another room.

➡ NO EMAIL- because this is my writing time and emails are administrative (and it's sure to derail me every single time).

I'm so curious, what kind of things help you settle into work mode at the start of the day? Have you ever considered writing them down?

"Fill the space you've been given." This was my "

"Fill the space you've been given."

This was my "phrase of the year" in 2021, taken from @RonneRock's book "One Woman Can Change the World". These words were deeply life-giving, as they reminded me time and again that my one true calling was to be faithful to the spaces God had given me. There was so much freedom in that! I no longer had to hustle and strive, instead, I could invest deeply and intentionally in the spaces He had given me.

As I considered whether God was giving me a word for 2022, I thought about why Ronne's words resonated so deeply with me. I think it's because at the heart of it all was this sense of faithfulness.

You see, faithfulness is clarifying. It frees us up to say 'yes' to the things of God and 'no' everything else. It invites us to move at a steady, consistent pace rather than an exhausting, breakneck speed. It grants us the opportunity to be who we are and authentically reflect the One who made us.

Faithfulness feels like a light and easy yoke.

So this is my vision for this next year, not just for me, but for my writing, too. If you have given me any space to speak into your life, this is what I want to share with you, this freedom to be faithful above all else. To pursue the things He's called you to and let go of the things He hasn't. To fully embrace the roles He's given you without fear, comparison, hustle, and striving.

Whatever it is God is laying before you or calling you into in the coming year, I pray you would feel the freedom to simply, faithfully "fill the space you've been given." 💞

This is what I’m choosing to cling to as we walk into 2022. No matter what happens, no matter what comes- God will work out His plans for my life. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

I’m not sure our generation will ever be able to skip into a new year with quite as much optimism as we have in years past. 2020 (and even 2021) taught us too much about the difficulty and disappointment a single year can hold.

Even so, I am looking forward to 2022 with a lot of hope! I trust that regardless of the difficulties this year may bring, it will also bring a lot of joy, a lot of growth, and a greater understanding of God's love and provision. And for now, that's all I need.

Don’t let an unknown future rob you of the hope God’s promises ensure. He will work out His plans for your life, friend. You can count on it. 💕

To the Mama who’s Advent Devotional time with the kids didn’t go exactly as planned…

I want you to know that as I was snapping this sweet picture, I was growling the words: “Stop goofing off and smile for just half a second would you!?”

I also want you to know that while my daughter was hanging up that sweet Advent Ornament, I was escorting my screaming son to time out because he lost his mind when J was chosen to open the first door…

I also need you to know that while I was reading the first devotion, all three of us snuggled in my bed, J was whining because she wanted to read the opening verse- but I had already read it.

So listen: It’s not going to be perfect, but PERFECT isn’t the point.

A very wise Mama friend (@sharonbrooks), once told me that building our children’s faith is like laying down one onion-paper-thin page at a time. A single “page” or conversation or devotional is flimsy on its own- and can easily tear. But when you’ve laid page, upon page, upon page, upon page- the pages add up. And soon enough your child has a book of wisdom and faith that is not easily torn.

So, Mama, if that advent devo time doesn’t go to plan, take a deep breath. That page may have gotten roughed up, but it’s building a book- and that’s what matters.

You’re doing a *great* job. And I’m cheering you on. 💕
