And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.
Luke 1:28-29 (ESV)
Luke 1:29 tells us that Mary was perplexed by this greeting, spoken by the angel. Surely, the appearance of the angel would be terrifying and amazing, but I wonder if it wasn’t also the words he spoke that gave her pause.
If you were to imagine yourself as Mary, and an angel appeared with this greeting for you, would you struggle to believe you had been seen by God, that you, in particular, were favored?
He may not send an angel to tell you, but he did dream of you, create you, and send his son to die for you. He knows the number of hairs on your head and every day you will live. Let me assure you this morning, YOU are favored by our God!
Mary had an important role to play in the salvation story and you, too, have a role to play. Do you feel you know what he is calling you to do? Does it feel impossible to you? Even Mary questioned how she could become pregnant. It was impossible! She had never been with a man.
I love what the angel says to her in response: “For nothing is impossible with God.”
I pray today, that you would know you are highly favored by the Lord, that he is near to you. I pray you would know that he has a part for you to play in his kingdom. May we answer our call as confidently as Mary when she said, “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be as you have said.”
